Lucia wants an abortion. Her homestate Texas, however, forces her to drive endless lenghts to an available clinic and then makes her wait 24 hours before she can get the procedure done. Director Anu Valia shows us the process of forced waiting through a string of everyday moments, which all form a part of Lucia’s experience.
Valia’s film, the winner of the top prize for Best US Short at the Sundance film festival, is most certainly a topical story in Trump’s America, where women’s rights and Planned Parenthood are being diminished at a rapid pace. But Lucia, Before and After is by no means a political pamphlet. Vivid and dreamy pastel-coloured scenes focus the story around Lucia’s endless waiting and the moments of beauty she finds during her wait.
