It starts off merrily rambunctious with the two boys in this short. They horse around near an abandoned sand pit and call each other names, in that wonderful Quebecois twang that has pleased ears so many times before at Pluk. But then a puddle of quicksand creates a dark turn.
Canadian director Jeremy Comté grew up in the countryside, and still likes to be inspired by the wild, untouched unpredictability of nature. But always coupled with what humans do with that: the boys act a little like wild animals, but the rough-hewn place they enter was created by man as much as by nature. His approach paid off: Fauve won Comté the Special Jury Award at last January’s Sundance Film Festival.
